Cleaner Streets and Improved Recycling as Cardiff Council and Students Join Forces

Cardiff Council has worked with university students in Cathays and Plasnewydd this summer in a concerted effort to tackle waste and promote recycling as part of the annual ‘Students on the Move’ campaign.

Launched in early June, the campaign saw increased refuse collections, daily street cleaning, a volunteer litter-pick, and the deployment of additional waste enforcement officers. Council staff conducted door-to-door outreach to ensure students were aware of the services available and understood how to manage their waste appropriately.

As a result of the campaign, more than 7,000kg of recyclable material was collected - an increase of 700kg compared to the previous year. This included 849kg of reusable items, 318kg of food donated to Cardiff Foodbank, and 5,964kg of general recyclable waste.

Pupils with Additional Learning Needs achieve national recognition through Arts Award

A remarkable group of 62 learners with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) from the Ty Calon Centre at Whitchurch High School have proudly graduated with an Arts Award, marking a milestone in inclusive arts education in Cardiff.

This inspiring achievement is the result of a dynamic collaboration between Cardiff Council’s Curriculum Team, The Impairments Team, Passport to the City, and UCAN (Unique Creative Arts Network) Productions.

Now in its second year, the programme began in 2023/24 as a pilot for 10 visually impaired learners, following UCAN’s selection as the mayoral charity by then-Mayor Bablin Molik. It has since grown into a comprehensive initiative supporting over 62 learners across six groups.

Asda Stores Ltd Fined £640,000 for Selling Out-of-Date Food at Two Cardiff Locations

Asda Stores Ltd has been ordered to pay over £655,000 after pleading guilty to selling food past its use-by-date at two of its Cardiff branches.

The case followed customer complaints, prompting officers from the Shared Regulatory Services (SRS) to carry out inspections at two Asda supermarkets in Cardiff on six separate occasions between January and June 2024.

During these visits, more than 100 food items were discovered to be past their use-by-date and were subsequently removed from the shelves. The affected stores were located at Capital Retail Park, on Leckwith Road, and the Pentwyn Superstore, at Dering Road, Pontprennau.

Some of the food products were found to be up to seven days past their use-by-date, with many being sold as ready-to-eat items. Several of these products were clearly marketed towards children, raising concerns about food safety and consumer protection.
