Cllr Dan
De’Ath, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Transport and Climate Change
said: “The council intends to buy new units so that people can park securely in
Cardiff. We know that bike theft is an issue, so we are starting a scheme that
hopefully will grow from the city centre into district shopping centres across
the city.
“The current
available solutions from the market include a variety of bike docks and bike
locker solutions, all at a different costs and specifications. We will ensure
that our facilities are powered through renewable energy and the ongoing costs
are predominantly covered through advertising and sponsorship.
“As we are
encouraging people to cycle, we want to make cycling more convenient, so we
must provide safe parking at key locations across the city. Through advertising
revenue, ideally, we would like these facilities to be free, but depending on
what solution is chosen, the daily rate could be as low as 50 pence, or up to
£1.50 for a day.
“The more
people that use the facilities, the faster the scheme can grow, so we ask all
interested parties to complete the survey, so we can get the first phase of the
scheme installed by this summer.”
The new
scheme will focus on the City Centre, Cathays, Grangetown and Cardiff Bay in
the first instance, but is intended to grow from the city centre, outwards,
into district shopping areas across Cardiff.
The current
options available from the market include a variety of bike docks, bike locker
solutions. The supplier will have to ensure their solution can be booked
through an online App, has an anti-tampering early warning system installed,
allow customers to lock and unlock the bike through an online application, as
well as book or reserve a space in advance.
The online
survey will close on March 3rd, to ensure that all necessary steps
can be taken to install the first phase of the scheme during Summer 2025. All
the current Sheffield Stands will also remain in place for cyclists to use, as
the council looks to increase cycle parking across the city.
