St Fagans Church in Wales Primary School, located in Michaelston Super Ely, has been commended in its latest inspection report by Estyn, the inspectorate for education in Wales.

The report highlights the school's strong nurturing culture, academic strengths, and commitment to pupils' well-being, while also identifying opportunities for further development.

Key Findings from the Inspection:

  • Inclusive and Supportive Environment: The school fosters a caring and inclusive atmosphere where pupils feel safe, happy, and respected. This environment supports nearly all pupils in developing excellent attitudes toward learning and achieving exemplary behaviour.
  • Progress for Pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN): Effective support enables pupils with ALN to make significant progress, demonstrating the school's dedication to inclusivity and tailored education.
  • Strong Literacy and Numeracy Skills: The teaching staff successfully promote literacy, instilling a love of reading and strengthening pupils' speaking, listening, and writing skills. Numeracy skills are also a highlight, with pupils confidently applying these in meaningful, cross-curricular activities.
  • Engaging Curriculum: A thoughtfully developed curriculum offers pupils enriching learning experiences, including visits and interactions that deepen their understanding of diversity and their community. Leadership opportunities, such as participation in the school's Senedd, equip older pupils with valuable skills.

The school's leadership, under the headteacher appointed in 2016, and its governing body were recognised for their valuable contributions. Governors effectively support and monitor school performance, while staff maintain clear and regular communication with parents to keep them informed of school activities and developments.

Headteacher Ceri Hawkins said: "'We are delighted with our inspection report which recognises the inclusive nature of our school, providing a nurturing and caring environment that enables our pupils to thrive.

"It is a testament to the dedication and hard work of all the staff, who work tirelessly to provide all children with opportunities to succeed and feel valued. We are thrilled that our pupils' contribution to school decision making and leadership, through our school ‘Senedd' has been recognised as part of Estyn's ‘Spotlight'. The school is grateful for the support of the whole school community with whom we celebrate the findings of this report."

A positive report, Estyn have made two recommendations for further improvement which the school will address in its action plan;

  • Enhance pupils' digital and Welsh language skills.
  • Provide more opportunities for pupils to exercise choice in their learning, fostering greater independence.

Cardiff's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Sarah Merry said: "The Estyn report clearly reflects the school's commitment to providing a safe, supportive, and enriching learning environment for every pupil. I enjoyed learning how the school enables pupil leadership through its Senedd and how valuable opportunities are provided for pupils to take on leadership responsibilities and develop skills that have a positive impact on the life and work of the school. Congratulations to staff, pupils and the wider school community on this encouraging report."

At the time of inspection, St Fagans Primary School had 205 pupils on roll. 17.6% of pupils

were eligible for free school meals and 5% of pupils identified as having additional learning needs.  11% of pupils had English as an additional language.
