The Cardiff Council initiative involves a citywide partnership focused on raising aspirations and creating opportunities for children and young people in the city. It brings together schools, businesses, and community partners to help young people develop the skills they need to thrive in the jobs market.

Cardiff Commitment was recognised by SOMO for its ‘significant contributions to advancing social mobility' through an innovative and collaborative approach, which helps pupils by raising their ambitions, and by developing essential skills.

The UK Social Mobility Awards, which launched in 2017, has become a key platform for promoting social mobility across all sectors. Each year, the awards attract entries from leading organisations across the UK that are embedding social mobility initiatives into their business strategies and creating lasting change.

Cardiff's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Sarah Merry said: "This is fantastic news! I'm thrilled that this initiative has been recognised for its efforts in providing opportunities that prepare Cardiff's young people for the world of work and aligns with our wider mission of making children's rights a reality in Cardiff, following our achievement of becoming the first UK Child Friendly City last year.

"This award is a testament to the power of collaboration and dedication. The Cardiff Commitment team works hard at creating meaningful opportunities for our young people. Well done to all those involved!"

Cardiff Commitment Programme Manager, Victoria Highgate said: "We are thrilled to be recognised as Public Sector Organisation of the Year at the UK Social Mobility Awards. This award highlights the dedication of our partners, from educators to businesses, in creating meaningful opportunities for young people in Cardiff. Together, we are working to ensure that every young person in our city, regardless of their background, has the chance to fulfil their potential."

The Cardiff Commitment's recognition at the 2024 SOMOs underscores its role as a leader in advancing equality and opportunities for the next generation.
