Greenhill Special School has been awarded the esteemed ‘Championship Status' for the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM), joining an elite group of only nine institutions nationwide.
The honour underscores the school's unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and empowering environment for all its pupils.
The Inclusion Quality Mark is a nationally recognised framework that evaluates schools based on their ability to provide inclusive education. Achieving ‘Championship Status' is the highest level of recognition within the framework and is awarded to schools that not only demonstrate exceptional inclusion practices, but also act as beacons of best practice, leading and inspiring other schools across the country.
Headteacher Shane Mock expressed his pride in the school's achievement, stating: "This award is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire school community. At Greenhill, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, and we are committed to ensuring that our school is a place where everyone feels valued and supported. To be recognised at this level is an incredible honour and reflects the strength of our inclusive ethos."
The rigorous assessment process for the IQM included a comprehensive review of the school's policies, practices, and culture with the school standing out for its innovative approaches to supporting students with a wide range of needs, its strong partnerships with other providers including ‘Storey Arms', close relationships with families and its commitment to continuous improvement.
As a Championship Status school, Greenhill will now have the opportunity to share its expertise and work closely with other schools to promote inclusive education on a national scale. This role will involve hosting training sessions, providing mentorship, and collaborating on research projects aimed at furthering the cause of inclusion in education.
Cardiff Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Sarah Merry said:
"Greenhill Special School exemplifies what it means to be truly inclusive and the unwavering commitment of staff to meeting the diverse needs of their pupils, is inspirational.
"This award is a significant milestone, serving as a reminder of the school's mission to provide every child with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive, regardless of their background or abilities.
"Achieving Championship Status is not just about what the school has accomplished—it's about what they continue to contribute to the broader educational community. Congratulations."
