Scope and Cardiff Council host disabled artists exhibition during Disability Pride month
 11/7/24

Scope’s Community Engagement and Youth Community Collective teams, Cardiff, have collaborated with Cardiff Council to host a free, two week, multi-medium art exhibition, featuring the work of disabled artists, at Central Library Hub, to celebrate Disability Pride Month.

Launching at 12.30pm on Saturday 13 July, the exhibition will be a celebration of incredible talent and features the work of 11 artists and organisations, two photographers, a poet.

Creative writing from members from Llanover Hall’s DICE classes and digital works of art will also be on display. Members of Scope’s Youth Community Collective have created ceramic tiles to celebrate Disability Pride month and other members have created bunting to bring a celebratory feel to the event.

Scope’s Community Engagement and Youth Community Collective members have supported Cardiff Council and Central Library Hub’s visitors for over 2 years. They’ve provided sensory boxes for visitors and hosted poetry and creative writing events, so it was a natural development to host a Disability Pride Month event at the venue.

The launch will be in three parts. During the first hour guests will meet and mingle with talks from four artists taking place the following hour. Finally, the Youth Community Collective members want to encourage discussions about disability and visitors can have one on one sessions with the artists.

Lisa Thomas, Youth Community Collective Facilitator, says:

“I would like to thank the teams at Cardiff Council and Central Library Hub for helping us organise this very special exhibition. They’ve gone more than the extra mile to support us and it’s been an absolute pleasure to collaborate with them.

“Our Youth Community Collective and Community Engagement members really wanted to do something special to celebrate Disability Pride Month in Cardiff. They decided that an exhibition, showcasing the work of disabled artists, was the perfect platform to open up the conversations needed to change perceptions and attitudes to disability.

“We’d love everyone to visit the exhibition and see the display of amazing talent by disabled artists from the city for themselves. I guarantee they’ll have a wonderful time and are inspired to have conversations they’ve never had before.”

Cllr Julie Sangani, Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Public Health & Equality at Cardiff Council says:

“We’ve really enjoyed working with Scope’s Youth Community Collective team over the last two years, they’ve helped us deliver a more accessible environment that’s really benefited our users and customers.

“Our team here has learned so much about the issues and barriers disabled people experience each day and what we can help to make their visit here as supportive and safe as possible.

“We’re all incredibly proud to be hosting the Disability Pride Month art exhibition. The standard of work people will see is absolutely incredible and I encourage anyone who’s in the area to come in and enjoy the show.”
