Road closures in Cardiff Bay from July 1st
On Monday July 1st, extensive works are taking place in Cardiff Bay for several different projects.
From 9am on July 1st, Hemingway Road will close to traffic in both directions - from the junction with County Hall roundabout to Lloyd George Avenue, including Schooner Way as far as Ffordd Garthone.
From 9.30am on Tuesday July 2nd, Schooner Way from Ffordd Garthone through to the rear entrance of County Hall will close to all traffic, but access to the rear of County Hall will be maintained.
From 9.30am on Friday July 5th, the access to the rear of County Hall will close to all traffic.
Diversion route
If you live on Schooner Way and want to access Cardiff Bay, please go via Tyndall Street and Central Link, exiting via Queen's Gate roundabout onto Pierhead Street.
‘What's Next?' work experience Award Celebration Event
An award and celebration event has taken place to recognise the achievements made through the 'What's Next? Award' work experience programme, which aims to reintroduce work experience for pupils in sixth forms across Cardiff.
Students and host employers came together to celebrate the achievements of pupils from Cantonian High School and reflect on the invaluable experiences and lessons learned throughout their work experience journey.
During the event students shared inspiring reflections through speeches, video testimonials, and written thoughts, showcasing remarkable personal and professional growth. Host employers shared their own positive experiences, highlighting the impact of their mentorship on the students' development. Certificates were awarded to the students, celebrating their outstanding achievements.
The ‘What's Next? Award' is part of Cardiff Commitment's ‘Learning Pathways' priority which aims to empower young people to make informed choices about their futures and support the economic recovery of the region through raising awareness of skill gaps and growth sectors in the city.
Thanks is given to all partners and sponsors for their support and commitment to nurturing the next generation of professionals.
A new cohort of year 12 pupils from Cantonian High School, Cardiff West Community High School, Ysgol Glantaf and Whitchurch High School will be going on work experience throughout July as part of the staged roll-out of the ‘What's Next Award'. A total of 460 work experience placements have been secured from 60 employers.
Pentyrch Primary School celebrate opening of new nursery and school expansion
Pentrych Primary School have celebrated the completion of construction works including the expansion of the existing school building and the official opening its first ever nursery provision.
The new development, undertaken by contractor Knox and Wells, has included a broad scope of works including a new single storey extension housing two classrooms with their own external play/teaching area including canopies, a new nursery with toilets and changing room, teaching kitchen, quiet room and external teaching space with canopies.
A new toilet block, staff office and headteachers office have been delivered, as well as hard and soft landscaping, infiltration basin and rain garden. The new scheme included the demolition of the existing single storey toilet block and double demountable classrooms.
During a special event on Friday 14th June pupils, parents, staff, governors and members of the community were invited to take part in a range of activities from natural crafts, campfire, traditional and party games as well as every child making a pendant with the new school logo on as a memento and designing and painting a commemorative pebble to be placed in the school's new courtyard area. Guests were given the chance to tour the new school building and view an exhibition of photos of Pentyrch Primary School over time.
Past pupils who left the school last year were invited to join in the celebrations as well as current Year 10 children who missed out on their year 6 celebrations due to Covid.
A whole school picnic lunch with celebration cakes made by the school cook alongside music from a brass quintet, Pendyrus Male Choir, whole school choir and a dance performance from pupils, concluded the celebrations.
Lakeside Primary School: "A happy and nurturing environment" says Estyn
During a recent visit by Estyn, His Majesty's Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales, Lakeside Primary School has been commended for creating a safe, happy, and nurturing learning environment.
Inspectors found pupils to make good progress from their starting points, growing into articulate and questioning individuals with a strong sense of community and global awareness. The school's emphasis on pupil voice groups has been particularly effective, enabling students to actively participate in discussions and decision-making processes.
The curriculum at the school has been praised for its range and quality, particularly in literacy, numeracy, well-being, and creative skills. This diverse curriculum equips pupils with the confidence and skills necessary to apply their learning creatively across various subjects. The provision for pupils with additional learning needs, both in mainstream classes and the Wellbeing Class, is also noted as a significant strength.
