Making travelling to school safer! More School Streets in place for start of new school term

Cardiff Council's School Streets scheme is to be expanded this September, with three new locations added to the scheme.

School Streets are areas around school entrances that are closed to vehicles during peak drop-off and pick-up times and are selected as part of the scheme, if they regularly experience problems with traffic and parking during school drop off and pick up times.

By closing the streets to general traffic for a short period in the morning and afternoon during term time, helps children to access school safely, reduces air pollution and supports families to actively travel to and from school.

The latest streets to be added to the scheme will be located in the following areas;

• Lawrenny Avenue in Leckwith serving the new Fitzalan High School, Ysgol Pwll Coch and Y Nyth, the Pupil Referral Unit located on the old Fitzalan High School site
• Railway Terrace in Riverside serving Kitchener Primary School
• Parts of Bromsgrove Street, Oakley Place and Hewell Street in Grangetown serving St Paul's Church in Wales Primary

First piloted in January 2020, the School Street scheme now includes 19 streets, helping to reduce traffic at 22 schools across the city. Positive feedback has been received from schools, parents and local residents who have benefitted from the initiative.

New opportunities, new skills and heaps of laughter

Enrolment for a wide range of recreational and educational courses with Adult Learning Cardiff now open.

The programme features Learning for Work, Learning for Life and DICE (Disability Inclusion in Community Education) courses as well as Digital Support schemes, providing adults across the city with the opportunity to gain new skills, improve their employability, enjoy a new pastime, meet new people and improve their wellbeing.

Courses start from Monday September 18 and are delivered in hubs and other venues across the city as well as online. Full details of the courses are available here:

New ‘destination' skatepark in Llanrumney granted planning permission

A new ‘destination' skatepark in Llanrumney has been granted planning permission.

Developed by award winning consultants VDZ+A and Newline Skateparks in consultation with the local skateboard community, the new skatepark will replace the existing timber-framed skate facility next to Eastern Leisure Centre.

Constructed from concrete, which will result in a lower noise, lower maintenance and higher quality facility, the new skatepark aims to provide an inclusive space for residents and skaters of all ages and abilities. The design was developed following public consultation with local skateboarders and residents.
