Here's your Friday update, covering: taking a fly-through new community living scheme; Maindy Park Trust make in principle decision on land exchange; 40 more accredited Living Wage Cardiff employers; and Welsh Blood Service appealing for donors.

Taking a fly-through new community living scheme

Plans for a brand new community living scheme for older people have been brought to life in a new computer-generated ‘fly-through' of the development in Riverside.

The scheme, which gained planning approval in December 2021, is part of the Council's ambitious new build programme to deliver more affordable housing in the city, and will provide flexible, sustainable, low-carbon accommodation for older residents to help maintain their independence in their own homes for longer.

The new short film gives a glimpse of how the 41 apartment building and community facility will look on Leckwith Road, on the site of the current community hall there. Showcasing the exterior and external areas of the development that will deliver 41 new apartments, a modern and flexible community hall, new Multi-use games area (MUGA), attractive landscaping and a much larger community garden, the footage is available to view  here

Maindy Park Trust make in principle decision on land exchange, subject to Charity Commission consent

A proposed land exchange at Maindy Park would be in the best interests of the Maindy Park Trust according to an in principle decision taken by Cardiff Council Cabinet, acting in its role as Trustee of the charity. The exchange is still subject to charity commission consent.

Now the exchange is approved in principle by the Maindy Park Trust, an application will be made to the Charity Commission for its consent to land at Cae Delyn Park replacing part of the land at Maindy Park, currently held in trust by the charity.

Only Cabinet Members who had not had any previous involvement in the Council's development proposals for the Maindy Park land, and did not have any other personal and prejudicial interest, took part in the decision-making process. All other Cabinet Members withdrew from the meeting.

An independent Maindy Park Trust Advisory Committee, comprised of three independent members of the Standards and Ethics Committee, established to manage the conflicts of interest in the decision-making process, had already decided that the proposed land swap was in the best interests of the charity and recommended approving the proposed land swap.

‘Do the little things' - Little actions can make a big collective difference

Forty more Cardiff organisations have become accredited Living Wage employers in the past year.

As the nation celebrates its patron saint today, the Council isagain taking the opportunity to say a big thank you to all the businesses and employers working to make Cardiff a Living Wage City.

At a time when cost of living pressures are causing serious concerns for thousands in the city, the Council is also calling on organisations not yet accredited to follow St David's advice by doing the little things, and consider what they can do to join the almost 200 organisations helping to make Cardiff a Living Wage City by paying their staff the Real Living Wage.

Leader of Cardiff Council and Chair of the Cardiff Living Wage City Steering Group, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: "We all know that far too many working people in Cardiff are struggling to make ends meet as the cost of living crisis really bites. We want to raise awareness of the real Living Wage, the difference it has made to thousands of people's lives across the city and the organisational benefits it is delivering."

All accredited Living Wage employers in the city are helping to make a real difference but collectively they are making a huge difference.
