Cardiff Council Update: 10 February 2023

Here's your Friday update, covering: Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeal; next week's barrage closure; Cardiff's International Digital Learner Teacher Trainer Week; and, it's Welsh Language Music Day.

Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeal

Devastating earthquakes have killed thousands of people in Turkey and Syria. Hundreds of buildings have been destroyed. Survivors are facing freezing conditions and need urgent aid. You can help by donating to the  Disasters Emergency Committee appeal.

Thousands of buildings, including hospitals and schools, have collapsed and infrastructure has been badly damaged. Local responders are desperately searching through the rubble for survivors.

People have been left without shelter in freezing winter conditions and desperately need blankets, emergency shelter, food and clean water.

DEC charities and their local partners are among the first responders providing urgent help. Immediate priorities are search and rescue, medical treatment for the injured, shelter for those who have lost their homes, heating in safe spaces, blankets, warm clothes, and ensuring people have food and clean water.

How you can help

You can help people affected by the crisis by  making a donation  and helping to raise money for the DEC appeal. This will allow DEC charities and their local partners to scale up their response and reach more people.

  • £10 could provide blankets to keep two people warm
  • £25 could provide emergency food for a family for ten days
  • £50 could provide emergency shelter for two families

Barrage closure next week

Cardiff Bay Barrage will be closed from the Penarth access gate to the Barrage café on Wednesday 15thFebruary from 8am until 4pm, in order for essential maintenance work to be carried out.

The work is anticipated to be completed in one day, but there is a possibility that it may extend into Thursday 16 February.

All vessels will be able to gain access through the locks during this time.

Cardiff's International Digital Learner Teacher Trainer Week 2023

Over 160 teachers and pupils have visited Cardiff this week from Germany, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Turkey.

As part of an international schools linking project, they've been looking at how Cardiff schools developed digital practices during and after the pandemic, with a blended learning approach.

The week began with a launch event at Cardiff City Stadium, where Education Officers presented an overview of the Education system and Cardiff 2030. After the introduction the student groups and their accompanying teachers today took part in interactive workshops using various digital tools such as s robotics, immersive reading, VR headsets and other activities.

Later in the week they took part in digital music sessions including a live digital garage band workshop, a vocal and beatboxing session, and drum workshop and a host of sporting activities.

The international delegates also visited some Cardiff primary and secondary schools to see examples of good practice of digital learning and teaching and taking part in ICT workshops.

A closing ceremony on the last day took place at City Hall where a presentation showed all of the work undertaken through the project and gave an opportunity for each country to share their experiences.
