Cardiff Council Update: 20 December 2022

20/12/22

Here is the latest update from Cardiff Council including: A reminder to all Cardiff residents to get involved in the budget consultation, the refurbishment of
Heol Llanishen Fach play area in Rhiwbina, the opening times for Hubs in Cardiff over the holiday seasonand advice from the Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust on the up-and-coming strike.

Cardiff residents urged to take part in budget consultation

Cardiff residents are being asked for their views on possible changes to council services following the news that the local authority will still need to find £23.5m to balance the books in 2023/24, despite receiving a better-than-expected 9% increase in funding from Welsh Government.

A number of factors including rises in energy costs, spiralling inflation, demand pressures, and expected pay increases for teachers, carers and other public sector workers, mean the council's budget for delivering day-to-day services like education, social care, refuse collection, parks and libraries is set to cost £75m more next year than it will this year.

A public consultation on a series of possible service changes which could help make savings and raise income will open on Friday, December 23, and run for around five weeks until January 29. In it, residents will be asked for their views on possible changes to services to help bridge the gap.

Oak-themed refurbishment for Heol Llanishen Fach play area

The play area at Heol Llanishen Fach is to get an oak-themed refurbishment, complete with acorn and oak leaf shaped features, in addition to log sculptures, accessible play equipment, and new seating.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, Cllr Jennifer Burke-Davies, said: "The play area at Heol Llanishen Fach is the latest facility to benefit from our ongoing £3.2 million programme of investment in parks and play areas across Cardiff. Once completed it should be a fantastic facility for local families to enjoy."

The designs include a toddler area as well as a junior play area, and are designed to appeal to children from the age of 5 upwards, encouraging imaginative play, climbing, education, and physical activity.

Children with as wide a range of abilities as possible are catered for, and play equipment will include a wheelchair accessible roundabout, and accessible swings.

The works also include a new circular seating area, as well as other additional and restored seating and bins.

Refurbishment work is due to commence in January and is currently expected to be completed in spring 2023.

Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust advice to residents on upcoming strike action

Strike action planned for tomorrow December 21 and next week on Dec 28 is expected to have a significant impact on the ambulance service's ability to respond to 999 calls.

We are sharing this advice on behalf of the service.

999 and emergency care:

  • On strike days, patients should only call 999 if seriously ill or injured and there is a risk to life.
  • Ambulances will still be able to respond in these situations, but this may only be where there is an immediate risk to life.
  • The service will always prioritise 999 calls according to the patient's needs and the sickest patients will always receive help first.
  • it is likely that only life threatening illnesses or injuries will receive an emergency response for the duration of the strike action.
  • Some patients might be asked to make an alternative arrangement, such as making their own way to hospital.

NHS 111 Wales:

  • TheNHS 111 Waleswebsite should be your first port of call for health advice and information, including Strep A.
  • You can also speak to a pharmacist, GP or visit a Minor Injuries Unit. You can find your nearest service on theNHS 111 Waleswebsite.
  • You can call 111 with an urgent concern, but high call volume means you need to be prepared for a lengthy wait for your call to be answered.

How the public can help:

  • Stock up on prescription medications and over the counter remedies for common ailments to reduce the risk of you falling ill on strike days.
  • Ensure you have adequate first aid kit supplies in the event you need to administer self-care for minor injuries at home.
  • Take extra care during the cold weather to avoid slips, trips and falls, and accidents on the road.
  • Look out for family, friends and neighbours who are especially vulnerable.
