Cardiff's indoor market reopens at night for first time since pandemic

Cardiff's historic indoor market will reopen at night this week for the first time since 2019 as the city continues its return to normality after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most of the stallholders are expected to take part on Thursday (May 26) between 6pm and 9pm and there will be an air of celebration, with music from Cardiff-based Daniel ‘Dabs' Bonner, the lead singer of the New Town Kings, one of the UK's leading reggae/ska bands.

The evening will also feature local artist Marcus Smith who was involved in last year's Cardiff street art project PWSH.

Louise Thomas, the market manager, felt it was an important night for the shopping venue. "We are reviving the night events which were very popular when we had them in the summer of 2019," she said. "We didn't feel able to hold them at all during the pandemic but we all feel more comfortable now and will hold them once a month during the summer.

"I think most of the stallholders will be staying open for the event," she added. "We will probably shut the doors at around 5.30pm on Thursday to give them a chance for a breather and something to eat before we open them again at six.

"With the food stalls, the quirky retailers, the music and the art, it should be quite a night."

Theatre group breathes new life into Cardiff's historic characters

A Cardiff theatre group will channel the spirits of some of the city's most fascinating deceased residents next month in a series of special performances at Cathays Cemetery.

‘Graveyard Voices' presented by the A48 Theatre Company, in collaboration with Cardiff Council's Bereavement Services department, has long been a popular feature of the cemetery's events calendar and regularly attracts a capacity audience.

This year's performances are on Tuesday, June 7, and Thursday, June 9 at 7pm, and the following Sunday, June 12, at 2pm. Each will be led by former council memorial manager Roger Swan who will guide audiences through a heritage trail of graves, stopping at a number of them to hear actors in period costumes recount the history of some of the more celebrated occupants.

The stories have all been written by A48's writing group, Living Lines, and illustrate Cardiff's rich and diverse past, paying homage to those who were part of it.

New Skatepark proposed for Llanrumney

A new ‘destination' skatepark is being proposed for Llanrumney which would see a modern concrete skatepark replacing the existing timber framed skatepark near Eastern Leisure Centre.

An online consultation is currently open, asking the local and wider-skateboard community for their input into the design of the skatepark, which is being developed by award-winning consultants VDZ+A and Newline Skateparks.

A council spokesperson said: "The proposals are at an early stage and will be subject to further consultation and a planning application later this year, but the aim is to design a high quality, inclusive space for residents and skaters of all ages and abilities.

"We want to encourage as many people as possible to be physically active and Skateboarding is an Olympic sport that appeals to people of all ages, from young children and teenagers to older skaters, many of whom are now introducing their children to the sport.

"Concrete skateparks are lower maintenance and create less noise, and as part of our citywide skateboard strategy which is currently being developed, we hope to improve or replace more existing sites as well as identify new locations, offering more opportunities for people to enjoy the benefits of physical activity, starting in Llanrumney."
