Here is the latest update from Cardiff Council, covering: a cowboy builder sentenced to three years in prison; the benefits to young people from Cardiff's Winter of Wellbeing Festival and coronavirus in numbers.
Cowboy builder jailed at Cardiff Crown Court
A rogue builder who duped four victims out of just under £15,000 has been sent to prison for three years.
Alan John Freeman, 63, from Mynachdy in Cardiff, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court, last Friday, March 25th.
Freeman, operating through the company name, ‘Alexander Building Maintenance' - requested a significant deposit from his victims for work to their homes, often carrying out work without the correct qualifications or a licence from Natural Resources Wales to remove waste from their property.
In all four cases, Freeman quoted a ‘very reasonable price' for the work, with half of the cost being requested upfront to pay for building materials and labour costs. Very little work was carried out on these properties and the work that was done was ‘unskilled', often requiring remedial works to be carried out by a qualified builder to finish or correct work done by Freeman.
The court heard that Alan Freeman has previous convictions for similar trading standards offences in 2015 and committed a further offence when he failed to attend court in July 2021 when he was on bail.

Thousands of young people benefit from Cardiff's Winter of Wellbeing
Thousands of children and young people across Cardiff have taken advantage of eight weeks of leisure, sports and cultural events held in the city as part of the Winter of Wellbeing festival.
The festival, following on from last year's Summer of Smiles, featured scores of free activities designed to give young people up to the age of 25 and their families a range of experiences, including stand-up paddleboard lessons, a barista course, indoor rock climbing, a silent disco, gaming, arts and crafts and theatre shows.
Jointly funded by the Welsh Government and Cardiff Council, the Winter of Wellbeing began in December with thousands of families gaining free access to all the live Christmas performances and events throughout the city, including the Bute Park light trail and Winter Wonderland.
Through a comprehensive arts and cultural programme, the Child-Friendly Cardiff ‘pop-up' shop in St David's shopping centre and a significant package of grant-funding for 24 community organisations across the city, it helped to develop young people's social skills and to express themselves through play and physical activity.
