Cardiff announced as Champion City by the Queen's Green Canopy
This National Tree Week (November 27 - December 5) Cardiff is celebrating achieving Champion City status under the prestigious Queen's Green Canopy.
The Queens Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to "Plant a Tree for the Jubilee".
With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage tree planting to create a legacy in honour of The Queen's leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.
Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said:"I'm delighted to confirm that Cardiff along with the cities of Belfast, Manchester, Bradford, Leicester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Southampton, Preston, York, Glasgow, Swansea, and Chester has been successful in achieving Champion City status under the Queens Green Canopy Initiative."
"We are a city of trees and the award of this status for Cardiff recognises the quality of the Council's tree stock, its importance to our city and supports our ambitious plan to increase our tree canopy across the city under the Coed Caerdydd project."
The Council's One Planet Strategy includes an aim to increase tree canopy from 18.9% to 25% by 2030. In order to do this, Cardiff council have established a long-term tree planting programme for the city called Coed Caerdydd. Find out more here:www.outdoorcardiff.com/biodiversity/coed-caerdydd
To celebrate each Champion City the QGC will host events in due course. Further details for Cardiff will be announced closer to the time.
