A multi-million pounds, post-pandemic recovery budget for Cardiff - designed to help create new jobs, deliver new council homes, build better schools and safeguard vital public services - has been agreed by Cardiff Council.

Millions will now be spent helping to get the city up and running again as it looks to recover from the effects of the pandemic.

Cardiff Council Leader, Cllr Huw Thomas, said:  "This is one of the most important budgets this council has set. COVID-19 has affected each and every one of us and it will affect our futures for many years to come. That said, our city has done a remarkable job, pulling together, to try to halt the spread of the virus. Right now we are battling the second wave, but hope is in sight as the vaccination programme continues to roll out. With that in mind, we are looking to the future, planning how we recover from the pandemic and how we prepare our city for the challenges ahead.

"This council must be at the forefront of getting Cardiff back up and running. We will do everything in our power to create much-needed jobs, whilst building better schools and new council homes for those in most need. We also want to help re-invigorate the city's cultural offering while building a greener and cleaner Cardiff - a city fit for the future - which has much to look forward to in a post-pandemic world, and we need to do this while safeguarding our public services which have played such a vital role supporting our residents throughout the pandemic."

Agreed last night are significant five-year spending plans to help Cardiff make a successful recovery from the pandemic, including:

• £378m investment in social housing including new council homes
• £251m on new school builds;
• £234m in economic development initiatives, including the new arena, the international sports village and the Atlantic Wharf redevelopment;
• £61m to develop cycle routes and improve transport infrastructure and active travel routes;
• £54.7m investment in existing schools infrastructure;
• £41.8m for disabled adaptations to help people continue to live in their own homes
• £41m investment in Highway infrastructure;
• £32.7m for neighbourhood improvements;
• £25m for green energy sustainability projects;
• £21.9m for the delivery of projects to tackle homelessness;
• £18m to support recycling and build a new recycling facility in the north of the city;
• £18m to address flooding and coastal erosion;
• £9.7m investment in parks and playgrounds;
• £5.4m investment in leisure centres;
• £4.3m investment in children's respite provision and accommodation for Looked After Children
• £3.2m investment in youth and wellbeing hubs.

New Mass Vaccination Centre to open for the Cardiff mand Vale of Glamorgan population

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board will be opening a fourth Mass Vaccination Centre as part of its Mass Vaccination programme to protect its adult population from Covid 19 as quickly as possible.

The Health Board is working in partnership with Cardiff Council and Vale of Glamorgan Council to increase capacity for vaccinations and the new Bayside MVC will enable additional capacity of up to 2,500 vaccines per day, which will be dependent on vaccine supply. The new centre will be available towards the end of March.

The new centre is being developed on the former Toys R Us site at the International Sports Village.The location of the site will be accessible for people in Cardiff and also residents in Eastern Vale.

The centre is the fourth to be opened in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan with all 60 GP Practices across the two counties also taking part in the programme and Community Pharmacies will also join the programme from April.

A positive test of one Reception aged pupil has been identified at Springwood Primary School in Llanedeyrn. 24 pupils and 4 staff pupils been advised by Public Health Wales to self-isolate for 10 days after they were identified as close contacts of the confirmed COVID-19 case. 

The total number of vaccination doses given by the Cardiff & Vale University Health Board so far, in both local authority areas: 134,749 (Total yesterday: 1,485)
