All play areas in Cardiff that have passed safety inspections now re-open

4/9/20
All children’s play areas in Cardiff that have passed safety inspections are now re-open.

The re-opening of these three play areas - at the Barrage (Cardiff Bay), Heol Llanishen Fach (Rhiwbina) and Rhydypenau (Cyncoed) mean that 107 of the city’s 116 play areas will be available for children to enjoy.

In line with Welsh Government guidance and health and safety legislation all sites have gone through a Covid-19 risk assessment and the equipment and safety surfaces have been inspected by a qualified playground inspector, prior to re-opening.

Changes have been made to some play areas to help maintain social distancing and minimise risk of transmitting Covid-19 – for example, some swing seats have been removed to ensure a 2 metre distance is maintained.

To help ensure safety, new signage has also been installed, asking families using the sites to:

·       wash or sanitise their hands, before, after and during using the equipment;

·       follow social distancing requirements;

·       limit visits to 30 minutes during busy times;

·       only have a maximum of one adult per child in the play area.

8 play areas will remain closed for the time being, having failed safety inspections.

Many of these 8 sites had already been earmarked for future investment prior to lockdown and have deteriorated or been vandalised further during the time they were closed.

Plans to carry out the significant improvement works needed to bring these sites back into safe use are currently being developed. Tenders are currently being sought for the delivery of a new facility at Parc Caedelyn (Rhiwbina) and the complete refurbishment of Grange Gardens (Grangetown).

The 8 sites remaining temporarily closed are:

Anderson Fields (Adamsdown); Cemetery Park (Adamsdown); Mill Road Recreation Ground (Ely); Grange Gardens (Grangetown); College Road open space (Llandaff North); Drovers Way (Radyr & Morganstown); Parc Caedelyn (Rhiwbina); Caerleon Park (Trowbridge).

One further play area, at Ty’r Winch (Pontprennau & St Mellons), will also remain closed while the Community Council completes work on the refurbishment of the tennis courts.
