Building new council homes

18/12/19

Plans to build 31 brand new apartments in an area of the city with high levels of housing need will be discussed tomorrow.

Cardiff Council is considering entering into a package deal contract with Willowmead Holdings Ltd to develop apartments for council rent, at the former Paddle Steamer public house site in Loudon Square,Butetown.

The development would support the Council's target of delivering 1,000 new council homes by May 2022, with plans in place to deliver a total of 2,000 new council homes in the longer term to meet increasing demand for affordable housing. The apartments would provide much needed, good quality council rental properties in a sustainable location, close to amenities and public transport.

In a package deal the contractor takes the lead in procuring the acquisition, design and construction of a project. Cardiff Council would then pay for the property once it was complete.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "The proposed package deal gives us the opportunity to build 31 new apartments for families in Butetown, an area that really needs more affordable homes.

"The project would see 31 two-bed flats being offered in a key location within already well-established communities and will also help us to deliver 1,000 new council homes by 2022."

Cabinet will consider recommendations for the Council to enter into a package deal contract with Willowmead Holdings Ltd at its meeting on Thursday, December 19.
