A series of events will take place across Cardiff over coming weeks in support of White Ribbon Day, November 25, markingthe United Nations Day for the elimination of violence against women and girls.

The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest global movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls and promoting gender equality.
 

Every year around November 25, thousands of people in the UK come together to raise awareness and work towards ending male violence against women.  The theme of this year's White Ribbon Day is ‘Creating a future without male violence against women'.

Candlelit vigils, marches, information stands,a fashion show and special all-faith services are among the events that have been organised in the city through November and up to December 10, which marks United Nations Human Rights Day. 

The flowerbed outside Cardiff Castle has also been planted with white blooms to depict the White Ribbon and help raise awareness of the movement.

In September, Cardiff hosted the‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes'event which saw over 100 men walk a mile in women's shoes around the city centre to show their support for the White Ribbon Campaign.

A council spokesperson said: "Cardiff Council was first awarded White Ribbon City status in 2014 and achieving the award demonstrates the city's commitment to make it clear that domestic abuse and all other forms of violence against women and girls will not be tolerated.

"We have a good track record of responding to domestic abuse and violence against women, with a range of specialist services in place to support individuals and their families.

"White Ribbon Day is a chance to raise awareness of this issue and part of that work involves encouraging people to wear a white ribbon and make a pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women in any form."

Every year in the UK more than one million women suffer domestic abuse and more than 360,000 are sexually assaulted. Although abuse against women is disproportionately higher, anyone can be affected by violence and abuse.

Domestic violence statistics show that 70% of incidents result in injury and that on average, two women in England and Wales are killed by a partner every week.
