Over £10 million funding boost for active travel and transport improvements

Cardiff Council has been successful in funding bids to the Welsh Government for a wide range of projects designed to improve both public transport and active travel in the Welsh Capital.

A total of £10,455,000 has been secured from a range of grants including the Local Transport Fund; Local Transport Network, Active Travel Fund; Safe Routes in Communities and the Road Safety Capital Fund.

The money will be spent in a variety of ways including:

  • Extending the nextbike fleet and trialling new electric bikes
  • Investment in the cycleway network and cycle parking
  • Improving the highway network in the city centre to encourage sustainable forms of travel
  • Improving walking routes
  • Building more bus lanes, to make travel by bus quicker
  • Improving active travel for schools
  • Additional 20 MPH limit areas and works to create a new default limit

Cllr Caro Wild, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport said: "The successful grant funding is great news for Cardiff. As a city, it is essential that we make travelling by sustainable forms of transport a more attractive and viable option.

"To improve both active travel and public transport, some significant changes will need to be made to the highway network. In effect, some roads will have to be completely redesigned to ensure both the highways and footways are safe for pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users as well as cars.

"By improving the infrastructure, sustainable forms of travel such as walking, cycling and travel by bus will become more appealing - as we have seen in many other European cities."

Now that the funding has been secured, a detailed project plan is being produced to ensure that the Council can maximise the benefits of this additional funding.

Details on specific projects will be subject to the Council's statutory decision making process and public consultation will be carried out where appropriate.
