Suffrage stories trail to mark centenary of first women’s vote

The fight for suffrage and the stories of local women involved in the cause will be told at Cardiff libraries and hubs across the city during December.

To mark 100 years since the 1918 General Election, the first in which women could vote following theRepresentation of the People Act, families across the city can explore the historical events that led up to the vote on a treasure trail around branch libraries and hubs.

Showcasing the wealth of resources in the city's local studies collection at Cathays Branch and Heritage Library, including old records, photos, maps and newspapers, the trail will take visitors on journey that included mass marches in Hyde Park, meetings and protests to individual acts committed by women from Cardiff, all with the aim of giving women the right to vote.

Eight information points hidden around hubs and libraries will reveal information with pictures or items from the Heritage Library relating to women's rights and suffrage.Families need to read the information and answer the questions correctly in the suffrage workbook to win a small prize.

Everyone who takes part in the trail from December 3 - 31 can also enter a citywide prize draw.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "The treasure trail in our libraries and hubs next month will be an excellent opportunity for families to find out about such a defining moment in our country's history - the decision to give women the vote and the first General Election on December 14, 1918 in which they were able to exercise that right.

"There is a wealth of information and records in our local studies collection at Cathays Branch and Heritage library about the events that led up to the December 1918 election. The activities in our hubs and libraries will be an engaging and fun way to explore these valuable resources and hopefully encourage people to find out more and visit the Heritage Library themselves."

In addition to the treasure trail in all of the city's libraries and hubs, Ely & Caerau Hub and Rhydypennau Library will also host exhibitions ofphoto and other materials relating to the Suffrage cause.
