Welcome to the last COVID-19 update of the week from Cardiff Council. 

Tonight: plans taking shape for further garden waste collections; the launch of a new ‘Stay Home, Grow Your Own' community project; our Adviceline and Hubs will be closed on the Bank Holiday; a Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan Youth Choir musical tribute to key workers across the region; and don't forget, Saturday garden waste collections continue this month, and waste is being collected as normal this Bank Holiday Monday.

The Cardiff Council COVID-19 update will return on Tuesday, 26^thMay. In the meantime, have an enjoyable Bank Holiday weekend, and stay safe.

One-off green garden waste collections will continue into June and the first week of July

Due to popular demand, the council will be extending the one-off green garden waste collections into June and the first week of July. More information, including collection dates for your area, will follow on Tuesday 26^thMay.

Residents are asked toonlyput green garden waste in their green bin or reusable sacks. If the green bin is filled with soil or any other item which cannot be composted, it will not be collected and a pink sticker will be placed on your bin.

Up until last weekend, through the one-off collections during May, the council has collected just under 1,000 tonnes of garden waste from wards across the city.

Normal kerbside garden waste collections will resume as soon as is practical. Further information will be published through the Council's website and social media channels when it is available.

‘Stay Home, Grow Your Own!' community project launched

Bute Park Nurseries are working with community growing groups and volunteers in Cardiff on a new ‘Stay Home, Grow Your Own' project to help encourage residents to grow their own vegetables and herbs during lockdown.

Thanks to funding from Food For Life Get Togethers vegetable seedlings grown at the Cardiff Council owned Nurseries, including ‘Midnight' Courgettes, ‘Shiraz' Peas, ‘Goldcrest' Sweetcorn, ‘Carmen' Cucumber and more, will be distributed by Splott based social enterprise Green Squirrel to local residents, families and organisations such as care homes, homeless shelters and the Cardiff Deaf Centre via the Edible Cardiff network.

The network includes Eartha in Roath, Grow Cardiff in Ely/Fairwater and Growing Street Talk in Grangetown/Riverside.

Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury said: "We're really pleased we've been able to provide integral support to this community project and play a part in helping get more people growing their own vegetables.

"The team at Bute Park do some fantastic work growing a diverse range of plants for Cardiff's many parks and green spaces, produce honey from their own bee hives and provide growing space for a local social enterprise - this is another great example of how we can support our communities, particularly at this difficult time."

Adviceline and Hubs - Bank Holiday Closure

Our Adviceline and four Hubs will be closed on Monday, May 25 for the Bank Holiday.

Musical tribute to Cardiff and Vale key workers

Members of the Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan Youth Choir have produced a musical tribute to key workers across the region for their efforts throughout the Coronavirus emergency.

The young singers, from one of a number of ensembles within the Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Music Service, have produced a touching video of themselves performing Louis Armstrong's ‘What a Wonderful World' together, each in their own homes. The film features pictures of friends and family connected to members of the choir, who are playing such an important role in their various jobs at the moment.

May Saturday Garden Waste Collections Continue and Bank Holiday Collection

A reminder that Saturday garden waste collections are taking place this month.

The areas of Cardiff that have their waste collected on aThursdaywill have a garden waste collection tomorrow,Saturday, 23^rdMay.

Residents are reminded that they must only put out garden waste for collection in their green wheelie bin or their reusable garden sacks.

Any additional garden waste, which is put in any other container, including plastic bags, will not be collected.

May Bank Holiday - No Change to Waste and Recycling Collection Dates

Your collection day will remain the same over the late May Bank Holiday this year, but collection times may change so please ensure your waste is out by 6am. 

Waste collection services will operate on Monday 25^thMay and there will be no change to collection dates for the rest of the week.

Our waste collection team will work across the bank holiday to ensure the collection service continues efficiently.

Recycling

We're asking that you continue to separate recyclable materials, just as you normally would, as we recognise that there would be no space in your black bin / red striped bags for these items if you didn't have a recycling bag collection.

Cardiff wants to become the best recycling city in the world, so we want you to continue to use your green recycling bags to keep up good habits for when the crisis is over.

Please note that,your weekly collections for recycling and food waste will return to normal from Monday 1^stJune.

This means that:

• Green recycling bags and food waste will be collected from each property every week, with black bag waste and hygiene waste collected every fortnight

• Green garden waste, bulky collections and the glass trial will remain suspended until further notice

• One-off green garden waste collections will continue to take place for the last weekend in May

• We plan to re-open our Recycling Centres at Lamby Way and Bessemer Close as soon as possible.
