Record number of Green Flags announced for Cardiff


Cardiff's stunning parks and green spaces have once again achieved the prestigious Green Flag Award.

Twelve parks and green spaces in the city maintained by Cardiff Council have been awarded the Keep Wales Tidy coveted international mark of quality, including Heath Park, which receives the recognition for the first time.

Bute Park, Cardiff Bay Barrage, Cardiff Bay Wetlands, Cathays Cemetery, Flat Holm Island, Grange Gardens, Parc Cefn Onn, Roath Park, Rumney Hill Gardens, Thornhill Cemetery and Victoria Park have once again met the high standards needed to receive the Green Flag.

Once part of Cardiff's ‘Great Heath', Heath Park is now an important green space for Cardiff's northern suburbs. The 37 hectare park provides sport and play facilities for all ages, but also contains woodland areas, ponds and wetland which are habitat for a wide range of plants and wildlife.

Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: "Being awarded an impressive twelve Green Flags is testament that Cardiff is committed to delivering excellent quality parks and green spaces to our residents and visitors to the city.

"Adding to the number of flags we have been awarded this year with Heath Park being recognised for the first time is fantastic and I am thrilled that the city continues to gain more Green Flags than anywhere else in Wales.

"This recognition demonstrates the effective partnerships that the council has and the contribution made from Friends of Groups and individual volunteers. Congratulations also to all staff involved in this achievement. They should be extremely proud of our parks and green spaces. I encourage people in Cardiff to get out and about and enjoy them this summer."

The announcement comes during the 12th annual Love Parks Week (13 - 22 July)organised by Keep Britain Tidy, where people across the country come together celebrate parks and show the world that parks matter to them.

The 201 flags flying are a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff and volunteers across the country who work tirelessly to maintain Green Flag Award standards.

A record-breaking 201 parks and green spaces, including universities, cemeteries, woodlands and allotments across Wales have met the high standards needed to receive the coveted Green Flag Award and Green Flag Community Award.

 

It is judged by green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, environmental management and community involvement.The Green Flag Award programme is delivered in Wales by environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy, with support from Welsh Government.
