Travel Information for the VOLVO Ocean Race

Extra services will be put in place by both the Council and public transport providers for the VOLVO Ocean Race, taking place in Cardiff Bay between May 27thand June 10th

For the first time ever, the VOLVO Ocean Race will be stopping over in Cardiff as part of the around the world ocean sailing race.

The race which left Alicante last October will travel to 12 cities across the world, covering 46,000 nautical miles over an eight month period.

Additional transport services will be provided for the Cardiff stop over on the peak days so the public can visit and enjoy the VOLVO Village. The peak days are Sunday May 27; Monday May 28; Saturday June 2nd; Sunday June 3rd; Friday June 8th; Saturday June 9thand Sunday June 10th.

There will be road restrictions at peak times on Harbour Drive/Britannia Quay and Porth Teigr Way.

Bus Services

For the VOLVO Ocean Race, working alongside the Welsh Government, VOLVO and other partners, a new electric bus - operated by Cardiff Bus - will be trialled on the number 6 Baycar service.

This service stops at Roath Lock which is where the former Dr Who Exhibition was located. The timetable for this service can be viewed through the following link -https://www.cardiffbus.com  

When the VOLVO village is open, extended bus services will be provided by Cardiff Bus up until 10pm. The additional services will depart on the hour and every 30 minutes past the hour, up until 10pm. Event Park & Ride

On Sunday May 27; Monday May 28; Saturday June 2nd; Sunday June 3rd; Saturday June 9thand Sunday June 10ththe Event Park & Ride will be located atWilcox House(CF11 0BA)

This Park & Ride facility can be accessed from Junction 33 of the M4, onto the A4232 (Link Road) following signs to Dunleavy Drive.

On Friday June 8ththe Event Park & Ride will be located inCardiff'sInternational Sports Village(CF11 0JS)

This Park & Ride facility can be accessed from M4 at Junction 33, continuing on the A4232 (Link Road), onto the A4005 towards Barry before turning left into International Drive by Morrison's supermarket

The drop off point is Porth Teigr Way which is next to the entrance of the VOLVO village.

The cost is only £5 per car which can only be paid in cash on the day.

The car park will open at 9am, with the first bus leaving at 9.30am. The last bus leaves the pick-up point at 10.30pm with the car park closing at 11pm.

Trains

Great Western Railway- On both Sunday May 27thand Monday May 28th,long distance services from London will be diverted between Reading and Bristol as a result of the engineering work in the Swindon area.Rail replacement buses will be running for all those travelling from Swindon.

Arriva Trains Walesis advising their customers that extra capacity will be added, where possible, on the expected peak days. All those travelling by Arriva Trains Wales services are strongly advised to buy a train ticket before getting on the train as revenue protection officers will be operating at Cardiff Bay Train Station

Can you walk or cycle?

All residents living in proximity to Cardiff Bay are encouraged to walk or cycle. On the expected peak days the race village is expected to be very busy and is easily accessible via Cardiff Bay or Cardiff Bay Barrage.

 When large crowds are gathered in the sports village, cyclists will be asked to dismount from their bikes and walk their bicycle through the crowded areas.

Disabled Parking

The parking bays which are adjacent to the Norwegian Church will be dedicated as disabled parking bays for the VOLVO Ocean Race event.

Car parking in Cardiff Bay

All those travelling by car on the peak days are encouraged to use the Event Park & Ride facility at Wilcox House. Car parking in Cardiff Bay is available either on street -https://bit.ly/2kjHhjn or at the Pierhead multi-storey car park; or the Red Dragon Centre on Hemmingway Road.
