Party time at Central Library Hub

Party time at Central Library Hub

The countdown is on to the start of this year's Summer Reading Challenge and a fun-packed party at Central Library Hub to celebrate its launch.

The launch takes place on Saturday, July 15 (2-4pm), marking the return of The Reading Agency's Summer Reading Challenge, which is delivered in libraries across the country.

This weekend's launch party will include lots of fun activities including arts and crafts, storytime, a treasure hunt and much more. Young visitors will be able to sign up for the challenge to read any six books of their choice over the school holidays at Central or any other branch library in the city.

The theme of this year's challenge is Animal Agents and features a team of clever creatures who go undercover to solve all kinds of crimes including peculiar goings-on at the library.

Children aged four to 11 can sign up for the challenge. Last year, over 6,400 children in Cardiff signed up andthis year it is hoped even more will get involved.

More than 7,700 people attended 342 events at Cardiff libraries last summer and a total of 134,980 children's books were issues during the school holidays.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: "The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic initiative and I'm glad to see Cardiff Libraries delivering another summer of activities for children in the city.

"Not only is the Summer Reading Challenge great fun, encouraging children to read for pleasure, it's an excellent way of keeping them engaged with books throughout the school holidays when literacy skills can dip.

"Our libraries do a fantastic job of sparking children's interest in reading and getting them involved."

There will be rewards along the way for children as they work their way through their six books and everyone who completes the challenge will earn a voucher for an ice cream at Joe's Ice Cream parlour on Wellfield Road as well as a certificate and medal.
